REFLECTION

Experience:

This semester’s Major Project was a truly valuable and intensive learning experience. From forming a team to developing the initial proposal, then moving into design production and visual refinements, I was able to fully engage with the animation pre-production process.

Through each task, I practiced a wide range of skills—from environment design, character turnarounds, visual research, to collaborative development with my teammates. The opportunity to receive weekly consultations gave me continuous direction and helped improve our work through iteration and constructive feedback.

I also learned how to manage long-term projects, set weekly goals, and maintain visual consistency across various parts of the animation pipeline.

Observations:

One of the most important observations I made was the impact of small design decisions on storytelling. For example, a character’s posture, facial features, or color palette can strongly influence how their personality is perceived. Similarly, the layout and accuracy of environment designs can either enhance or distract from the story.

Another key observation was how well-defined teamwork and role division allowed the group to operate efficiently. When each member clearly understood their tasks—whether character design, storyboarding, or environment illustration—it made our production pipeline much smoother.

Finally, I saw how feedback plays a central role in refining creativity. Initial drafts may lack clarity, but with peer and supervisor input, designs can be transformed into more expressive and meaningful visuals.

Findings:

Throughout this project, I discovered that:

  • Visual design is not just about aesthetics—it’s about communication. Every design choice should support the narrative.

  • Real-world references greatly improve the believability and depth of both characters and environments.

  • Iteration and flexibility are essential. Most of our best ideas came after testing and revising previous versions.

  • Story-driven thinking helps unify every element in the project—from character development to background layout.

  • I personally found that I really enjoy working on visual world-building, and I’ve grown more confident in my design decisions.
